Second Bank hit by Malware attack similar to $81 Million Bangladesh Heist
SWIFT, the global Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications, warned on Thursday of a second malware attack similar to the Bangladesh central bank hack one that led to $81 million cyber heist.

In February, $81 Million cyberheist at the Bangladesh central bank was carried out by hacking into SWIFT, the global financial messaging system that thousands of banks and companies around the world use to transfer billions of dollars every day.

However, the hackers behind the cyber heist appear to be part of a comprehensive online attack on global banking and financial infrastructure.

The second attack involving SWIFT targeted a commercial bank, which the company declined to identify. SWIFT also did not immediately clear how much money, if any, was stolen in the attack.

However, SWIFT spokeswoman Natasha de Teran said that the second attack and the Bangladesh bank heist contained numerous similarities and were very likely part of a "wider and highly adaptive campaign targeting banks," the NY Times reported.

The malware involved in the Bangladesh cyber heist was used to manipulate logs and erase the history of the fraudulent transactions, and even prevented printers from printing the fraudulent transactions.

The malware used in the attack also has the capability to intercept and destroy incoming messages confirming the money transfers, preventing hackers to remain undetected.
SWIFT said in a statement that the attackers clearly exhibited "a deep and sophisticated knowledge of specific operation controls within the targeted banks — knowledge that may have been gained from malicious insiders or cyber attacks, or a combination of both."
News of a second attack involving SWIFT comes as law enforcement authorities in Bangladesh and elsewhere investigate the February's $81 Million cyberheist at the Bangladesh central bank account at the New York Federal Reserve Bank.

The hackers had attempted to steal $951 Million in total from Bangladesh central bank account using fraudulent transactions, but a simple typo by hackers halted the further transfers of the $850 Million funds.

SWIFT has acknowledged that the scheme involved Bangladesh cyberheist did not harm its core messaging system.

However in both the cases, insiders or hackers had successfully penetrated the targeted banks' systems, pilfering user credentials and submitting fraudulent messages that correspond with money transfers.

If yes, then you might be wondering with a fact that the Apple had delivered an ineffective patch update this time.

Yes! This news would definitely disappoint many Apple users, as the latest update of OS X El Capitan 10.11.4 and iOS 9.3 still contain a privilege escalation vulnerability that could affect 130 Million Apple customers.

Just last week, we reported about a critical privilege escalation vulnerability in Apple's popular System Integrity Protection (SIP) security mechanism, affecting all versions of OS X operating system.

SIP Bypass Exploit Code Fits in a Tweet


Interestingly, Stefan Esser, a security researcher from Germany, has released a new exploit code to bypass latest patched version of SIP application, which just fits in a Tweet.

Here's the exploit code -- It can be used to modify a crucial OS X configuration file that not even root user is allowed to touch, reported The Register.

The above code actually expands to:

The above exploit code successfully bypasses Apple's SIP technology, allowing one to run processes as it is pleased.

What is System Integrity Protection (SIP)?


Apple introduced SIP, a security protection feature to the OS X kernel, with the release of OS X El Capitan, which is designed to restrict the root account of OS X machines and limit the actions a root user can perform on protected parts of the system.

Besides this, System Integrity Protection (SIP) also helps prevent software from changing your startup volume, blocks certain kernel extensions from being loaded and limits the debugging of certain apps.

System Integrity Protection or SIP, by default, protects these folders: /System, /usr, /bin, /sbin, along with applications that come pre-installed with OS X.

This is really a bad time for Apple and its users. Now, let's hope that the company would be more vigilant with its upcoming patch update.

Critical Flaw in Magento leave Millions of E-Commerce Sites at Risk
If you are using Magento to run your e-commerce website, it's time for you to update the CMS (content management system) now.
Millions of online merchants are at risk of hijacking attacks due to a number of critical cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in the Magento, the most popular e-commerce platform owned by eBay.

Why the Bugs are So Serious?

Virtually all versions of Magento Community Edition 1.9.2.2 and earlier as well as Enterprise Edition 1.14.2.2 and earlier, are vulnerable to the Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaws.

How Easy it is to Exploit the Flaw

The XSS bugs are quite easy to exploit. All an attacker need to do is embed malicious JavaScript code inside customer registration forms in place of email address.
Magento then runs and executes this email containing JavaScript code in the context of the administrator account, making it possible for an attacker to steal administrator session and completely take over the server running Magento.
Cybersecurity firm Sucuri describes the bug as the worst hole, saying:
"The buggy snippet is located inside Magento core libraries, more specifically within the administrator's backend. Unless you are behind a WAF or you have a very heavily modified administration panel, you are at risk."
"As this is a Stored XSS vulnerability, this issue could be used by attackers to take over your site, create new administrator accounts, steal client information, anything a legitimate administrator account is allowed to do."

Patch your Software Now!

To prevent websites from exploitation, webmasters are recommended to apply the latest patch bundle SUPEE-7405 as soon as possible.
Since the latest patch resolves the issue for Magento version 1.14.1 and 1.9.1 and earlier, problems impacting Magento versions 1.14.2.3 and 1.9.2.3 have already been resolved.

Remove vulnerable java software now.

Security issues have long tantalized over 850 Million users that have Oracle's Java software installed on their computers. The worst thing is that the software was not fully updated or secure for years, exposing millions of PCs to attack.
And for this reason, Oracle is now paying the price.

Oracle has been accused by the US government of misleading consumers about the security of its Java software.
Oracle is settling with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over charges that it "deceived" its customers by failing to warn them about the security upgrades.

Java is a software that comes pre-installed on many computers and helps them run web applications, including online calculators, chatrooms, games, and even 3D image viewing.

Oracle Left Over 850 Million PCs at Risk

The FTC has issued a press release that says it has won concessions in a settlement with Oracle over its failure to uninstall older and insecure Java SE software from customer PCs upon the upgrade process, which left up to 850 Million PCs susceptible to hacking attacks.
However, the company was only upgrading the most recent version of the software and ignoring the older versions that were often chock full of security loopholes that could be exploited by hackers in order to hack a targeted PC.
Oracle is Now Paying the Price
So, under the terms of the settlement with Oracle, announced by the FTC on Monday, Oracle is required to:
  • Notify Java customers about the issue via Twitter, Facebook, and its official website
  • Provide tools and instructions on how to remove older versions of Java software
Oracle has agreed to the settlement that is now subject to public comment for 30 days, although Oracle declined to comment on its part.
Meanwhile, the FTC wants Java users to know that if they have older versions of the software. Here is the website that will help you remove them: java.com/uninstall.

FREAK' — New SSL/TLS Vulnerability Explained

Another new widespread and disastrous SSL/TLS vulnerability has been uncovered that for over a decade left Millions of users of Apple and Android devices vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks on encrypted traffic when they visited supposedly 'secured' websites, including the official websites of the White House, FBI and National Security Agency.

Dubbed the "FREAK" vulnerability (CVE-2015-0204) - also known as Factoring Attack on RSA-EXPORT Keys - enables hackers or intelligence agencies to force clients to use older, weaker encryption i.e. also known as the export-grade key or 512-bit RSA keys.

FREAK vulnerability discovered by security researchers of French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (Inria) and Microsoft, resides in OpenSSL versions 1.01k and earlier, and Apple's Secure Transport.

90s WEAK EXPORT-GRADE ENCRYPTION
Back in 1990s, the US government attempted to regulate the export of products utilizing "strong" encryption and devices were loaded with weaker "export-grade" encryption before being shipped out of the country.

At that time, it was allowed a maximum key length of 512 bits for "export-grade" encryption. Later in 2000, with the modification of the US export laws, vendors were able to include 128-bit ciphers in their products and were able to distribute these all over the world.

The only problem is that "export-grade" cryptography support was never removed and now three decades later, FREAK vulnerability make it significantly easier for hackers to decode the website’s private key and decrypt passwords, login cookies, and other sensitive information from HTTPS connections.

HOW FREAK VULNERABILITY WORKS ?
Assistant Research Professor Matthew Green of Johns Hopkins University's Information Security Institute in Maryland summarizes the FREAK vulnerability in ablog post detailing how a hacker could perform MitM attack:
  • In the client's Hello message, it asks for a standard 'RSA' ciphersuite.
  • The MITM attacker changes this message to ask for 'export RSA'.
  • The server responds with a 512-bit export RSA key, signed with its long-term key.
  • The client accepts this weak key due to the OpenSSL/Secure Transport bug.
  • The attacker factors the RSA modulus to recover the corresponding RSA decryption key.
  • When the client encrypts the 'pre-master secret' to the server, the attacker can now decrypt it to recover the TLS 'master secret'.
  • From here on out, the attacker sees plain text and can inject anything it wants.
36% SSL WEBSITES VULNERABLE TO HACKERS

A scan of more than 14 million websites that support the SSL/TLS protocols found that more than 36% of them were vulnerable to the decryption attacks that support RSA export cipher suites (e.g., TLS_RSA_EXPORT_WITH_DES40_CBC_SHA).

Cracking a 512-bit key back in the '90s would have required access to supercomputers of that time, but today, it can be done in seven hours and cost nearly $100 per website only.

It is possible to carry out FREAK vulnerability attack when a user running a vulnerable device — currently includes Android smartphones, iPhones and Macs running Apple's OS X operating system — connects to a vulnerable HTTPS-protected website. At the moment, Windows and Linux end-user devices were not believed to be affected.

'FREAK' VULNERABILITY SIMILAR TO 'POODLE'
FREAK vulnerability is similar to last year's POODLE flaw or Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption, which allowed hackers to downgrade the entire SSL/TLS Internet-communication security suite to the weakest possible version. FREAK affects only those SSL/TLS implementations that accept export versions of protocols that use the RSA encryption algorithm.

Security researchers are maintaining a list of top vulnerable websites and encourage web server administrators to disable support for export suites, including all known insecure ciphers, and enable forward secrecy.

APPLE AND GOOGLE PLANS TO FIX FREAK
Google said an Android patch has already been distributed to partners. Meanwhile, Google is also calling on all websites to disable support for export certificates.

Apple also responded to the FREAK vulnerability and released a statement that, "We have a fix in iOS and OS X that will be available in software updates next week."

Crash Your Friends' WhatsApp Remotely with Just a Message

A Vulnerability has been discovered in the wildly popular messaging app WhatsApp, which allows anyone to remotely crash WhatsApp just by sending a specially crafted message, two security researchers reported ‘The Hacker News’.

Two India based independent security researchers, Indrajeet Bhuyan and Saurav Kar, both 17-year old teenagers demonstrated the WhatsApp Message Handler vulnerability to one of our security analyst.

In a video demonstration, they showed that by sending a 2000 words (2kb in size) message in special character set can crash the receiver's app. The worried impact of the vulnerability is that the user who received the specially crafted message will have to delete his/her whole conversation and start a fresh chat, because opening the message keeps on crashing WhatsApp unless the chat is deleted completely.
"What makes it more serious is that one needs to delete entire chat with the person they are chatting to in order to get back whatsapp work in normal," Bhuyan told THN in an e-mail.
According to the duo, the reported vulnerability has been tested and successfully works on most of the versions of Android Operating system including Jellybean, Kitkat, and all the below android versions.

Similarly, Any member of your WhatsApp group could intentionally send a specially crafted message to exit people from the group and delete the group. Also, for example, if I don’t want someone to keep records of my chat with them, then I can also send the same message exploit to the person.

The vulnerability has not been tested on iOS, but it is sure that all versions of WhatsApp including 2.11.431 and 2.11.432 are affected with this bug. Also the attack does not work on Windows 8.1.
They have also provided the Proof-of-Concept (PoC) video for the attack, users can watch above.

WhatsApp, bought by Facebook for $19 billion in February this year, has 600 Million users as of October 2014, and according to the researchers, an estimated number of users affected by the vulnerability could be 500 Million.

WhatsApp was in news recently for making end-to-end encryption on all text messages as a default feature in an effort to boost the online privacy and security of its users around the world. The app maker describe this move as the "largest deployment of end-to-end encryption ever."

Oracle’s newly launched Data Redaction security feature in Oracle Database 12c can be easily disrupted by an attacker without any need to use exploit code, a security researcher long known as a thorn in Oracle's side said at Defcon.

Data Redaction is one of the new Advanced Security features introduced in Oracle Database 12c. The service is designed to allow administrators to automatically protect sensitive data, such as credit card numbers or health information, during certain operations by either totally obscuring column data or partially masking it.

But according to David Litchfield, a self-taught security researcher who found dozens and dozens of critical vulnerabilities in Oracle’s products, a close look at this Data Redaction security feature help him found a slew of trivially exploitable vulnerabilities that an attacker don't even need to execute native exploit code to defeat the feature.
David Litchfield is a security specialist at Datacomm TSS and the author of The Oracle Hacker’s Handbook, For many years, he was one of the top bug hunters in the game and specialized in digging into the Oracle’s database products and breaking them.

Data redaction feature is actually a "great idea", Litchfield said during a talk at the Black Hat USA 2014 conference on Wednesday. But unfortunately, the feature is so thoroughly riddled with basic security vulnerabilities that it is trivial for attackers to bypass it.
If Oracle has a decent security development lifecycle in place anyone would have found these flaws and stopped them in tracks, Litchfield said. “Anyone with a modicum of SQL would have found these bugs.
The database security expert found many methods to bypass the data redaction feature and tricking the system into returning data that should be actually masked in Oracle Database 12c.

Litchfield then started giving a live demonstration of some of many flaws he had discovered in Oracle’s data redaction feature, some of which were previously documented in his paper PDF.

The first method is to use the "RETURNING INTO" clause after a DML operation. This clause allows data to be returned into a variable - a big failure on Oracle's part that he said could be used to bypass Oracle data redaction, which would have been discovered by conducting only a penetration test.

A second method he found is essentially a brute force attack on the data in a redacted column in a database.
Another way to gain access to the data is with an iterative inference attack. It is possible to access data in a SELECT’s WHERE clause. This gives an attacker the opportunity to essentially guess or brute-force the data in a redacted column using a WHERE data LIKE predicate. Consider the following PL/SQL procedure. This simply tests the value of a given character at a given offset into the string. When it gets the first character correct it moves on to the next character and so on until all 16 characters of the credit card have been ascertained,” he said in the paper.
Litchfield said that the methods he found were so simple and so easily done that he doesn't even feel right to call them exploits.
There are issues that are trivial to find. They’re still not learning the lessons that people were leaning in 2003,” he said. “It’s 2014 and yet I’m still able to sit down and in the space of a few minutes find a bunch of things that I can send to Oracle as exploitable.
The data redaction bypass flaws have been patched, but Litchfield said he recently sent Oracle a critical flaw that enables a user gain control of the database, which isn't patched yet but is in the pipeline. This shows that its Java security problems still persist.
